various lots: paintings by roger jones

Roger Jones 1935 -2018

Roger was a Stroud based artist and was involved, as a chair and trustee, in the early years of the Stroud Valley Artspace (SVA)
He was born and raised in Birmingham and was a self taught artist. Roger studied at Birmingham School of Architecture and continued in that disipline until 1964 when he was a finalist in a John Moores competition for a piece of site-sculpture. He was offered a first free 'studio' space in a hay loft by a farmer near Norton, Gloucestershire where he had settled with his family.

He was able to concentrate on abstract constructions and painting and since 1967, he had many one man shows and won many prizes. He taught art at several collegages including Corsham, Birmingham and mainly in Bath where he became the head of the college for many years.

He retired in Stroud, loved the artistic community he found and continued to create new work, and exhibit until not long before his death.

He was a passionate supporter of the peace movement all his life and his family know he would want to support fund raisings for the victims of war in Ukraine and elsewhere. They are grateful to the Stroud Brewery for making this happen.
